Over the summer, we made changes to our physical space, our technological offerings and our programming.
Physical changes: In response to student requests for quiet places to study, with the help of Ed Konopka and the custodial team, we moved our study carrels and three tables to the back of the library and posted signs indicating this was a new silent study area. It’s already getting lots of use and rave reviews from students. Technology changes: ProQuest AP Science: ProQuest AP Science, a new database, was added to our collection of electronic resources. It is a comprehensive collection of 536 magazines and journals. Disciplines covered include earth, life, physical, medical, and applied sciences. Nearly 100% full-text coverage from 536 titles ensures students can find and access the information critical to completing coursework. In addition, more than 450 titles include full-page images in PDF, so charts, graphs, and other images key to understanding and interpreting scientific data are not lost. Listen Current: The LMC, English Department, Social Studies Department, and the Administration jointly purchased our first audio database, Listen Current. It contains real world public radio stories that span the curriculum. It includes content- aligned stories and daily current events that will connect our classes to the real world. Programming additions: Our daily trivia questions and frame game puzzles are popular with students. They even created a tile for the new school mural about these games. To keep students engaged, we added monthly STEAM challenges. The library will sponsor a series of activities from creating mobiles based on the work of Calder to building small catapults. Signs and instructions will be posted in the LMC. September’s challenge is a geometric shapes scavenger hunt. As with the frame game, prizes will be awarded! Our last meeting for the year was help June 2 at the Middle School Library. The theme was Fandom/Cosplay. Many HS students attended. Some in costume, some not. Books were given away. Plans for next year were made. Fun was had by all.
