The Library Media Center and World Languages Department
Books - The LMC has a special section for print materials in languages other than English. The shelves with these materials are against the wall, next to the biographies. Currently, this collection is very small. It includes some texts from your offices and some dictionaries.
Magazines - Shelved with our other periodicals are People En Espanol and the French version of Reader's Digest. I'll buy two more to support the department in FY 2016.
Online Encyclopedias - Encyclopedia Britannica (EB) and World Book's (WB) online versions have many special features for you and your students.
EB - A World Atlasfeature allows users to zoom in from a map of the whole earth, to a continent, to a country, to a city. From major geographical features zoom in to see street maps and major attractions. A World Data Analyst feature presents one page of information on every country in the world: proper name, form of government, population, demography, vital statistics, etc. The ranked statistics feature within this tool compiles information for all countries and allows you to view the countries with the highest or lowest rates, totals, or percentages for selected statistical categories. The Compare Countriesfeature allows users to choose any two countries and see side by side comparisons of statistical information or articles and images from the encyclopedia. Enciclopedia Moderna is a EB's Spanish language encyclopedia for high school students. Escolar Online is for younger children, but may be useful for Spanish 1 classes.
Finally, EB is an easy place to look for images and video. It has a citation tool that makes citing images, video, and articles easy.
WB - has a large collection of newspapers from around the world.
Databases - All the articles in Gale databases include a translate feature and a listen to feature. Students researching any topic, such as Chile, can find articles, translate them into French, Spanish, or Mandarin (or many other languages) and hear them spoken in that other language. The Gale databases also include scholarly articles in languages other than English. Periodicals in French, Mandarin, and Spanish are listed here.
Word Map - is an experiment that combines google translate and wikipedia. It shows the relationship between language and geographical space. If there are more topics you'd like me to find websites about, just let me know. I'm happy to curate a collection of informative or fun, world language-based web sites.
