Just before April vacation, I set out four bottles, three boxes, a ramp and a sign. The sign had the challenge to send a box the farthest by simply releasing a bottle at the top of the ramp. The students had fun experimenting and went above and beyond!
Who would have thought that covering a table with stick on whiteboard paper would be such a draw! Besides being a creative outlet, students report that doodling or drawing on the table is a stress reliever!
We just surpassed 650 visitors per week!! WHS students are using the databases and tools provided by the library more than ever before!
After a few weeks of living with a loud buzzing noise (imagine a leaf blower running non-stop just outside the door) the library media center is quiet again. Due to the ceiling height, a lift was needed to reach the ceiling. Thanks to all the students who went with the flow while the crew was here. A special thnks to all the students who helped us put the furniture back in place.
As I logged in to the WHS LMC website to post the above, I noticed that we had almost 1,000 hits last week! I hope they were mostly students researching with databases. Thanks to Jeff Blue for writing a grant to WHSPO and to WHSPO for funding his request, the LMC patio now has three umbrellas and bases. The shade provided makes the space more useful than ever! Here are pictures of students making good use of the space:
This year, the beginning of May brought a new STEAM Challenge. Thanks to the generosity of the WPSF, many supplies are available for students to create mobiles. In addition to being artistic creations, the students are experimenting with levers, balance and resistance. The sample mobiles, by Calder, were informed and inspired by his knowledge of physics, math and astronomy.
Here's the first mobile completed. Thanks to Joe O, a junior! To celebrate poetry month, students and classes are decorating the windows by writing poems in glass markers. Some interesting books of poetry are on display. Some English teachers borrowed a full cart of poetry books for poetry scavenger hunts. Needs some ideas for pleasure reading?April vacation could be a great time to discover the next great pleasure reading book. The Young Adults Library Services Association, YALSA, just announced the 2016 Teens' Top Ten nominees. Here's a link books loved by teens around the country. LINK
Thanks to a STEAM grant from the Wayland Public Schools Foundation, our first Snowball Catapult Challenge is underway.
